Fort Myers, City of Palms Thursday 2-3-12

It is 83 degrees today and we are in the City of Ft Myers Yacht Basin with our stern facing the seawall and streets of downtown Ft Myers.  Restaurants, art galleries and shops are just two very short blocks from the boat.  This is a real happening place so close to our marina.  We think that we have chosen a great place to spend the month of February.  As a side note for all of you further north, we are running the air conditioning in the afternoons now.
Ft Myers is known as the city of palms.  It looks as though there at least 4 palm trees for every resident!  Fort Myers really is a beautiful city.
Sunset from our boat.

Palm trees line every street.

Our wonderful friend, Roger, who lives in Merritt Island on the east coast, scheduled customer visits in Tampa and Okeechobee City and detoured here just to give Wayne a ride back to Vero Beach to bring our car over to Ft Myers.  Roger spent the night Tuesday on the boat with us and we enjoyed a great dinner at French Connection restaurant.  Wednesday morning we had a delicious breakfast and excellent Southern hospitality at Gwendolyn,s Café and then Roger and Wayne left for Okeechobee City and Vero Beach.   All said, Wayne was back to the boat at 4:45 in the afternoon.  We went to Publix grocery first thing this morning to refill our empty refrigerator.  Thank you again Roger.

All manner of entertainment is scheduled in Fort Myers this month.  This Friday evening is the art crawl through the refurbished “Downtown District”.  This occurs on the first Friday of each month from 6 to 10 PM.  Then on Saturday and Sunday the “Artfest Ft Myers” takes place on the street right behind our boat slip.  The city has already closed off the street two days ahead and is setting up tables and food courts, marking off booths on the street and in the park 300 yards to the west and commencing all sorts of preparations.  We will have a catbird’s view of the happenings and the throngs of people expected.  We awoke this morning to streets that were barricaded off and virtually empty.  Overnight two ATMs were deposited on the opposite street corner to our boat.  There were no exhibitor tents on the street at 8AM but by 10AM there were scores already set up.  We took a preemptive tour of the booths and are amazed by the quality of the art.  This is probably the best art we have ever seen at a show and we have only seen a small portion today.  At 6Pm the booths will be open and we can see it all and then see it again tomorrow and Sunday if we want.

On February 17th there will be a music walk from 7 to 12 in the Downtown District and on Feb 15th a classic car cruise-in takes place from 5 to 8 pm. On Feb 18 is the “Edison Light Parade” that we understand is a great event. And, again, it runs on the street right behind our boat. There is a theatre just 200 yards away and we plan to take in some more plays this winter. Colleen was thrilled by the “Full Monty” that we attended in Vero Beach and vows that she will drag Wayne to other local events that don’t require pliers and ratchet wrenches and screw drivers.
